O Dear Lord,
Three things I pray
to know thee more clearly,
to love thee more dearly,
to follow thee more nearly,
day by day.
St. Richard recited this prayer on his deathbed in 1253. He never could have imagined the rhyming triplets of clearly, dearly and nearly in his prayer would provide the words for the most popular song in the musical “Godspell” in 1971.
