John August Swanson
Seeing the Sacred in the Ordinary A Creative Vision Bringing Stories to Life
John August Swanson has lived and worked in Los Angeles, California his whole life. He paints in oil, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media, and is a master printmaker of limited edition serigraphs, lithographs and etchings. John's work reflects his wonderful gift of storytelling and his unique ability to "bring stories to life." He holds up the values of our community and retells our sacred stories reconnecting us with our shared cultural values. John's art explores the diversity of the human experience with an emotional simplicity and spiritual directness. His vision gently guides us to see that sacred moments in our ordinary lives reminding us that God is always there if we take the time to look and feel His presence.

The Art of Sister Corita Kent
Peace, Love & Social Justice Nun, Teacher, Printmaker & Social Activist
Sister Corita gained international fame for her vibrant serigraphs during the 1960s and 1970s. A Sister of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, she ran the Art Department at Immaculate Heart College until 1968 when she left the Order and moved to Boston. Corita’s art reflects her spirituality, her commitment to social justice, her hope for peace, and her delight in the world that takes place all around us. On Sept. 18, 1986 Corita finally lost her battle with cancer and died at a friend's home. The spirit of Corita and her art is carried on by the Corita Art Center in Los Angeles, California. We will celebrate Corita's creative legacy and her unique approach to teaching, creating art and inspiring artists. (1918 – 1986)

Sergio Gomez
Puertas Abiertas: Opening Doors with Art Painter, Gallery Owner, Curator, Designer & Teacher
Sergio Gomez is a Chicago based visual artist who is a creative dynamo. As an artist, he's produced several large thematic bodies of very powerful paintings and maintains a busy international exhibition schedule. He is the Owner of the "33 Contemporary Gallery" as well as Director of Exhibitions for the Zhou B. Art Center, both located in Chicago. Sergio and his wife Yanina run 3C Wear, selling artist designed t-shirts to raise money for school supplies for Chicago area kids. And he teaches art & graphic design at South Suburban College. Sergio amd his art is featured in Cecilia Gonzalez-Andrieu's book, A Bridge to Wonder: Art as a Gospel of Beauty and played an important role in inspiring our conference.

Steve Prince
The Second Line: Art as a Catalyst for Change Printmaker, Sculptor, Teacher & Art Evangelist
Steve Prince is an artist who is a printmaker, sculptor, educator and art evangelist. He is a native of New Orleans & the rhythms of the city's art, music and religion pulsate through his work. Steve's favorite mediums are printmaking, drawing and sculpture. Through his complex compositions & rich, visual vocabulary, Steve creates powerful narrative images that express his unique vision founded in hope, faith & creativity. Steve is a very charismatic presenter who can preach, lecture and do wonderful group workshops. He has appeared in Grand Rapids many times and has a large following in West Michigan. Steve and his wife Val currently teach at Allegheny University in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

Timothy R. Botts
Creative Calligraphy and the Art of the Word Master Calligrapher & Art Evangelist
Timothy Botts is a master calligrapher who lives in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and recently retired from Tyndale House Publishers where he worked as a book designer for 40 years. Timothy studied with Arnold Bank at Carnegie-Mellon University as part of his graphic design training and was deeply influenced by the art of Sister Corita Kent. He has spent his artistic life creating expressive calligraphy of Bible verses, hymn, spirituals, and other great words and has published 10 books including Portraits of the Word and most recently Bound for Glory. Timothy's unique calligraphy provides the "scriptural glue" for our exhibit, illustrating the biblical foundation we all share. He has taught workshops internationally where he often demonstrates the act of creating word pictures as a devotional experience.

Carolyn Elaine
Building Bridges with Art in Our Communities & Schools Mosaic Artist & Creative Collaborator
Carolyn Elaine is a Chicago community-based artist who works with the colorful art of the mosaic. She has collaborated with community groups, schools, artists, and arts professionals for over fifteen years. Her exquisite mosaic installations can be found all over the city of Chicago, created with partnerships between The Chicago Public Art Group, the City of Chicago 1% Program, The Oak Park Area Arts Council, and dozens of other organizations. Born and raised in Chicago, Elaine is a product of the Public School system and understands the importance of integrating art into the curriculum in communities where children may not otherwise be exposed to it. She holds a B.F.A. degree from Chicago's International Academy of Merchandise and Design and a B.A. degree from Western Illinois University.

Martin Erspamer, OSB
Art & The Benedictine Way Painting, Printmaking, Paper Cutting, Ceramics, Stained Glass
Brother Martin Erspamer is a Benedictine monk of St. Menirad Archabbey in southern Indiana. He attended a Marianist High School and became influenced by the work of the Marianist artists, joining their community in 1971. He received an MFA from Boston University in 1986 and began his career as a liturgical artist working in painting, illustration, ceramics, stained glass, furniture and worship space design. In 2004 Brother Martin became a monk himself, moving to St. Meinrad Archabbey. He has creatively renovated over fifty churches and his stained glass designs have transformed many worship spaces. Brother Martin's religious illustrations are well known and his art has been used on covers for many OCP missals. His art celebrates the Benedictine motto - "that in all things may God be glorified."

Jo-Ann VanReeuwyk
Visual Art in Education & Worship Fiber Artist, Organic Sculptor & Art Educator
Jo-Ann VanReeuwyk is Chair of the Calvin College Art Department and Director of Calvin's Art Education Program. As a teacher Jo-Ann creatively utilizes art in education, worship and multi-cultural relationships. As an artist she uses her fibrous organic sculptures to create self-portraits and intimate portrayals of personalities and experiences. In 2008 Jo-Ann was part of "Charis," a multi-cultural art experience & exhibit in Indonesia. In 2010 she had a sabbatical show called "Sanctuary: Hallowed Space, Holy Place" at Calvin College. Jo-Ann was recently named the 2013 Michigan Higher Education Teacher of the Year. In June, 2013 she was part of a Visual Arts Seminar in South Africa, where 10 North American artists engaged 10 South African Artists sharing insight and ideas that will become a traveling exhibit.

Chris Stoffel Overvoorde
Liturgical Art - Creative & Affordable Painter, Printmaker & Visual Theologian
Chris Overvoorde is professor emeritus of art at Calvin College. Since retiring Chris has been very active in the Grand Rapids art community as a teacher, liturgical artist, painter, member of the West Michigan Eight and Grand Rapids Art Museum doscent. He will be featuring the liturgical work he's done for Grace CRC, his church of 30 years here in Grand Rapids and doing workshops on creating his distinct liturgical art. In 2003 Chris had a one man show at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. He's published Passing the Colors: Engaging Visual Culture in the 21st Century, the story of his life in art and in 1990 began an artist-in-residency with the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. Chris and his wife Greta continue to make annual excursions to Blaremore, Alberta where he paints the prairie. His art is widely collected.

Linda Witte Henke
Exploring Our Religious Symbols Contemporary Liturgical Art in Textiles & Fabric
Linda Witte Henke is a contemporary textile artist from Indianapolis who specializes in spiritually expressive work created for liturgical purposes. Working continually between abstract and representational forms, Linda utilizes the vibrant palette, tactile richness, and extreme versatility of textiles to fabricate inspiring liturgical art. She imaginatively uses the symbols of our Christian traditions to create original art that gives an "exterior expression to her interior reflections" on scripture, worship and her own spiritual journeys. Linda invites us, "to reflect more deeply on spiritual themes and embrace a more nuanced understandings our own beliefs and the beliefs of others." Linda is Lutheran minister who works full time in her visual ministry exploring textiles and creating liturgical art.

Athanasios Clark
A Creative Vision of the Spiritual World Greek Orthodox Iconographer
Athanasios or "Tom" Clark and his wife Sophia, are proud parents of 5 boys (2 of whom are finishing Mosaic School in Italy) and live in Athens, Greece where Tom works as a full time iconographer. Tom studied for 5 years under Master Iconographer Kostas Tsilsavides in Thessaloniki, Greece. He works closely with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and his icons were featured at the Ecumenical Fraternity in Jerusalem, where he lived and worked for a year in the Monastery of the Holy Cross. Tom's icons are in many churches and homes across the U.S. and abroad. He created the icons in Saint George Antiochian Orthodox Church & many of the icons in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, both located in Grand Rapids. Tom is originally from Chicago and his wife Sophia is from Grand Rapids.
